Fateful Encounter: An Old Friend

“Oh, I can’t believe this.”

The three of them, two students and a horse, turned at the voice. Kimmy strutted in, skirt frills waving furiously, frying pan in hand like an executioner’s axe.

“Can’t you people just leave your work at home for once? Seriously, I try and have a nice day out and you two have to drag some big dumb spiky horse thing right into the damn cinema! I mean, you’ve got an entire shopping center  couldn’t you go into the food court or something!?”

~Heaven Smiles, chapter 12

Back when I was writing Heaven Smiles Kimmy was my favourite character to write for, much as my one fan prefers Eusey and her warmer charms. What started out as a flat idea of “Asian proto-goth ninja” blossomed into a fully realised person with her own unique brand of surliness. With her frying pan and a quick barb ever ready, you could be sure she would leave a scene in a completely different state than when she entered.

Today, in celebration for Fate Core making yet another stupidly high Kickstarter stretch goal (go pledge now, people) I’ll be converting Kimmy from a hacked Dresden Files NPC to being fully Fate Core compliant. Now you too can insert her into your games, letting her kill black unicorns of doom with a swift blow upside the head.

Hit the break to see what I’ve done with her, you won’t be disappointed.

Hokage “Kimmy” Kunoichihime

Good (3) NPC, Dead Swingers

Daughter of a fullblood ninja mother and the vagrant father she never knew, Kimmy finds herself caught between her heritage and her freedom. Instead of attempting to ‘earn’ her way into the good graces of a family she doesn’t care about, she is headhunted into the Dead Swingers and moves to Melbane City.

High School Half-Ninja Hellhound | Daughter of the Hokage Clan | Domestic Warrior Princess | Dead Swinger

Great (+4): Physique
Good (+3): Athletics | Fighting
Fair (+2): Intimidation | Lore | Notice
Average (+1): Will, pick any three skills.

  • Roll with the Blow (Athletics): When you succeed with style on a defend action against an opponent’s Fighting roll, you gain a scene aspect with a free invocation, as opposed to just a boost.
  • Killing Stroke (Fighting): Once per scene, when you force an opponent to take a consequence, you can spend a fate point to increase the severity of the consequence that he must take (so minor becomes moderate, moderate becomes severe). If your opponent was already going to take a severe consequence, he must either take a severe consequence and a second consequence or be taken out.
  • Tough as Nails (Physique): Once per session you can reduce the severity of a moderate physical consequence to a mild physical consequence, or erase a mild physical consequence altogether, at the cost of a fate point.

Kusa’s notes

Apologies for being 2 days late with Fateful Encounter this week. And for missing Save Point last week. A lot has been happening recently, including two retirements of higher-ups at my job and purchasing myself a Wii U for Christmas. We’ll be back to regular schedule next week, promise!

Today’s Lesson: Better to seek forgiveness than ask permission.
